Today, I chatted with a guy that is working hard to build a home automation company that will cater to the growing needs of urban India. While chatting with this person, I realized that our growing nation is at a stage where not just automation, but a host of other business opportunities are opening up.
CAR WASH BUSINESS
For instance, look at the Car Wash business. In 2015, there were 28.6 million cars in India, representing an increase of 306% from 7.04 million in 2001. This growing statistic is a reflection of the average auto consumer's appetite for new vehicles. To start a car wash center in India, location will play a vital role in deciding monthly revenues. One would need a location that is closer to either offices or residential areas and would require government permit. Secondly, the car wash business will need to obtain waste water disposal permits. However, this is a capital intensive business and will require the person to train others to run it successfully. Additionally, the car wash business is very competitive and may need regular revisiting of the business plan. A school friend is already running a successful car business in Pune and I believe there is a huge market for this business.
RESIDENTIAL SOLAR POWER
As the discussion flowed, the automation business guy mentioned the increasing use of solar power panels in homes. He quoted that installation of a residential 3KV solar power system can be installed for as low as INR 70,000. I researched more and discovered that one can put surplus power into the electricity grid, and earn credits in your electricity bill. In a country like India that receives a lot of sunshine, solar power can prove to be the ultimate game changer in the energy consumption sector.
BATTERY STORAGE
Spurning from this discussion, our minds wandered off to the battery storage business, the next disruptive technology in the power energy sector. Storage prices are dropping due to growing market for consumer electronics and electric vehicles. The lithium-ion powered batteries have been developed to an extent that storage is already economical for many commercial businesses. This technology has the ability to transform the way customers consume and possibly produce power in the future.
STORAGE FACILITY BUSINESS
Coming back to the present, the other storage business is creating tremendous excitement in the United States. The storage facility business can take a number of different forms. For instance, a facility can offer public storage in relatively small lockers where customers can store their personal items. Other facilities can look like warehouses and offer large storage rooms to individuals as well as local businesses. A climate-controlled storage can be used not only by locals but also by universities, historical societies and museums. Self-storage units can serve a person's relocation needs by storing old furniture, artwork and other collections. This business requires large up-front capital investment and advertising along with the promise of quality customer service. I think the storage business can only be profitable if the business can operate the facility on an existing land or a very low rented space.
